Pillar 3 - Communicate Clearly

Clarity isn’t just nice to have - it’s what trust is built on.

I see this all the time in sales and business development: people think sounding smooth equals good communication. But that’s not how it plays out. I’ve been in plenty of meetings where everyone talks a good game, looks confident, and at the end… nobody actually knows what’s next, what’s up for discussion, or even what they agreed to.

Here’s the thing: when you’re not clear, deals don’t blow up in your face. They just slowly fall apart. Clients rarely say, “Hey, I’m confused.” They just stop getting back to you.

The real takeaway? Clarity starts way before you open your mouth. It starts with listening. And I don’t mean just nodding along, waiting for your turn. I mean actually tuning in. When you do, you hear what people are really saying - not just what you expect to hear.

That leads to a handful of habits I come back to:

- Actually listening when it counts. Not spacing out when it matters most

- Explaining things simply, so clients aren’t stuck piecing together your message

- Asking open-ended questions to get real answers, not just one-word replies

- Sharing feedback honestly and accepting it, without making things awkward or defensive

- Tweaking your style as needed, but not losing what makes you, you

Bottom line: the second your client has to put extra effort into understanding you, you’re already losing their trust.
