Pillar 2 - Understand People

The biggest mistake in commercial conversations is assuming you already know what the other person is thinking.

You probably don't. And neither do I - not automatically, not without real effort.

Understanding people is a discipline. It requires you to stay genuinely curious when a client resists you. To ask questions when you feel the urge to explain. To hold space for the possibility that the person across from you is making perfect sense - you just don't yet understand the logic behind their position.

And there's a specific layer of this that almost no sales curriculum touches: change psychology.

Most commercial conversations - whether you're selling a solution, proposing a new approach, or managing a long-term account - are fundamentally conversations about change. And human beings, without exception, are wired to protect themselves from change. We overweight the risk of what we might lose and underestimate the value of what we might gain. This is not a flaw. It's how we're built.

The moment you understand that, every "I need to think about it" and every "we're happy with our current supplier" becomes readable. Not as rejection, but as information.

What this pillar covers:

  • Buyer psychology: how decisions are actually made (not how we assume they're made)

  • The psychology of risk aversion and status quo bias in B2B contexts

  • How to build genuine empathy without losing your commercial clarity

  • Reading resistance as data, not as defeat
